Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan in Holyoke, Massachusetts, as a,low-impact indoor sport named "Mintonette". Designed as a blend of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball for YMCA members, it quickly evolved, with the offensive "set and spike" technique originating in the Philippines in 1916.
